Chunky PS1-style

Quick Summary

Chunky PS1-style is a graphic art style that deliberately recreates the rough, limited technical characteristics of 5th-generation 3D gaming systems (particularly the PlayStation 1).

Core characteristics of Chunky PS1: Extremely low-Polygon 3D models with jagged edges, combined with blurry, grainy surface textures (Textures).

What is Chunky PS1-style?

The Chunky PS1 style doesn’t create smooth frames — it deliberately simulates the mechanical defects of the 1990s. Identifying elements include: very low-detail 3D models with rough angular edges, grainy and pitted surface textures (Textures), and particularly the visual artifacts of warping, distortion, or jittering whenever the camera moves — due to coordinate calculation errors of old hardware.

Today, this graphics design direction is not due to budget constraints but is a very popular artistic choice among Indie groups for the Retro Horror genre (Retro Horror). The blurry, difficult-to-clearly-see imagery of objects creates a feeling of extreme fear and psychological unease. From the chilling progenitor Silent Hill 1, to current prominent indie projects like Signalis or Iron Lung — PS1 graphics is a perfect weapon for hiding truth in grainy darkness.
