🟢 Luigi
Luigi is Mario’s younger brother and the second playable character in the Super Mario Bros franchise. Often overshadowed by his older brother, Luigi has gradually developed his own distinct personality and fan base.
1. Role in the Franchise
Luigi first appeared in Mario Bros (1983) as a palette-swapped version of Mario for two-player mode. As the franchise expanded, Luigi took on a more defined role as the “underdog” sibling — taller, more jumpy, but somehow always second place.
2. Character Development
Over time, Nintendo worked to give Luigi his own identity beyond Mario’s shadow:
- Luigi’s Mansion: Rather than a straightforward Platformer, Luigi’s own game series casts him as a ghost-hunting scaredy-cat with a vacuum cleaner (à la Ghostbusters).
- Personality: In contrast to his courageous older brother, Luigi often appears visibly nervous, anxious, and clumsy — attracting a large fan base due to his “relatable” human qualities.
