What Environment Artists Do
While 3D Modelers create individual assets, Environment Artists compose them into complete spaces:
- Placing rocks, trees, buildings, debris in believable configurations
- Setting up lighting to convey mood and atmosphere
- Adding micro-detail — moss, cracks, weathering — to make spaces feel lived-in
- Optimizing scenes for performance (LOD, occlusion culling)
- Ensuring visual storytelling supports the narrative
Hard Surface vs Organic
- Hard surface specialists: Architecture, machinery, interiors
- Organic specialists: Forests, terrain, caves, natural landscapes
Relationship to Level Design
Environment Artists and Level Designers work closely:
- Level Designers define gameplay space (where enemies spawn, where cover is)
- Environment Artists make that space visually compelling and believable
The same room can be blocked out by a Level Designer and then dressed by an Environment Artist.
